The Tenerife disaster took place on March 27, 1977, at 17:06:56 local time (also GMT), when two Boeing 747 airliners collided at Los Rodeos (TCI) on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, killing 583 people. The accident still has the highest number of fatalities (excluding ground fatalities) of any single accident in aviation history. The aircraft involved were Pan Am Flight 1736, named Clipper Victor, under the command of Captain Victor Grubbs, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Flight 4805, named Rijn (Rhine River), under the command of Captain Jacob Veldhuyzen van Zanten. KLM 4805, taking off on the only runway of the airport, crashed into the Pan Am aircraft which was taxiing on the same runway. Tenerife North Airport (TFN) (then called Los Rodeos - TCI), is situated in the northern part of Tenerife, and is now used mainly for flights within the Canary Islands and flights from the Spanish mainland. We Will remember the People died in the crash. And hope it will never happen again.

explicit clearance? They didn't even receive a vague take off clearance!!!

dude, they (d) are racist, they just ignored those "(n.s.)", can't you tell them by their behavior in S. America? So they ignore the atc's who are natives and with heavy racism disobey them. Like a police officer who ignores a few school children and gets his head blown off. Fools... Patronizing their superiors

he just took off without permission

That's an understatement. He's responsible for the manslaughter of over 500 people as far as I'm concerned. He totally IGNORED instructions in that kind of visibility? Unforgivable.

The KLM crew made a number of inexcusable errors: first and foremost, they attempted takeoff without explicit clearance. Further, the PNF (in this case the FO) should have copied the essential parts of what he thought was the takeoff clearance, "[flight number] cleared to takeoff [runway number]" and once they began the takeoff he should have transmitted "[flightnumber] rolling". If he had done either of these things, the controller would have been aware of what was happening in time.

A lot of people died because a KLM 747 attempted takeoff without clearance.

Details The Pan-Am pilots were very confused as to the turn-off and messaged the tower repetedely that they were having trouble finding it. The controller was short with the pilots with his "3 1, 2, 3" transmission. Also, the Pan-Am pilots "we're still on the runway" transmission was squaked out due to the controller trying to broadcast at the same time. The KLM pilot was trying to rush getting off the ground because he feared the airport would be closed due to fog further delayng the flight.
