Tail Hook Landing Practice - On Board Video

Here is the on-board view during a tail hook landing practice session with the Super Cub. I like that you can see the hook in the view of the tail. Watch how it flexes during take-off and landing. Unfortunately, I haven't caught a wire with the camera aimed at the tail yet. The on-board view gives a better idea of the height I have been flying for this task. I took the video shown in this film before I realized how low I needed to fly to catch the wire more regularly. As I fly around, look for light poles and street signs. I use these as visual cues during different phases on the approach to gauge my altitude. I have been most successful catching the hook when I fly about 5' - 8' above the ground starting in the downwind approach. The hard part is that the camera I use makes it very risky to fly this low without loosing control (throws the COG right). All of my successful traps have been in low wind, without the camera attached to the plane. This video also shows my preferred pattern, which is landing on the traffic circle and flying parallel to the basketball goals and the school building. This pattern gives me the most room to work with, but it all depends on the wind. I don't like using the parking lot except for emergency landings.
