What would you suggest? Ruby? Perl? Worse ... PHP? Java was a very logical choice. Mostly because it's got automatic memory management. One of the largest issues with developing for the iPhone is managing memory by hand. I'd suggest that you stop talking out of the side of your neck and actually do a little research (AND CODING) for both platforms. You'll see that the Google platform is far superior.

They were using their own private wifi network for the demo, not Wembley's fast wifi or a cellular network

I'd suggest that as the Android platform is open and the iPhone platform is closed, it really speaks for itself...
