I feel Opeth lacks the restrained intensity Gorguts has. It's like - and no insult is meant! - Gorguts dials it back, where Opeth just doesn't have it to begin with. I don't think Opeth could go all-out on... you know, just being heavy - "brutality" - whereas Gorguts absolutely killed on Obscura, etc.

Gorguts got regulated to the back shelf early-on, largely because of their melodic technicality. Back when everyone was trying so hard to BE "hard," Gorguts was considered too melodic to be paid much mind. I consider them one of the best and always have.
