I agree with the comment made by guitardavid79. Bill Hickman the hitman driving the charger was a stuntman in real life. I read that he was good friends with James Dean and was with him when James Dean died in 1955. Bill Hickman died in 1986 from cancer. I am trying to find out the name of the other hitman (older man) who played Bill's partner. I don't think his name is in the cast characters at the end of the movie. Anyone that can help me? I love the engine grown of the charger at 5:35.

The car chase by which all others are judged. The interaction between the two badguys is so cool...they never say a word to each other and the driver only cracks a faint smile at the point he looks in his rearview mirror to see the mustang wiping out in the dirt!!!

Man, I just love that Mustang, actually, I like both cars.

Steve was capable of driving the Mustang, but too dangerous for a superstar, the stunt drivers were,I believe,Charger:Bill Hickman,Mustang:Bud Ekins,(who also did the motorcycle jump in The Great Escape.)

and no, both cars were modified, rather heavily, especially when it came to suspension. the mustangs they didn't do enough too, and mcqueen took the hill way too fast, thus when the car landed, it hit so hard, that it tore the drain plug from the oil pan... (not exceedingly hard to do, been there, done that) ... and bent the flywheel... oops.i have a full article covering all this. but my god... mcqueen having a driver step in for him... the blasphemy!

a driver step in for mcqueen...???!!!are you mad?!where on this godforsaken rock did you get that information?

If you go back and read the history of the how the cars were behind the scenes, you will find they had to have a driver step in for steve. Also the charger was way faster then the stang and had to be slowed down to stay even. The stang suspension had to be moded.

2 were used in filming. the one used (the only one seen on camera. It took the damage :P) was sold to a junkyard and made into scrap metal. The other was sold to a person in the mid 70's, and was offered to be bought back by steve mcqueen, but the owner refused. After McQueen's death, the owner of the mustang sold it, and its whereabouts are unknown :(.
