If you had 1 engine on the left and 1 on the right you would have an equal amount of thrust coming from both sides.And believe me no 747 pilot would ever shut down a good engine. Period. A 747 will actually fly quite well on 3 engines.This shutting down a good engine on the other side to balance out the thrust huskerfan608 is telling you is complete nonsense.

...hmmm, nice try, if you're trying to convince folks you're type-rated on a jet you'd best stop suggesting you'd shut down a perfectly serviceable engine just to counteract a bit of yaw. Perhaps you've not read about the function of a rudder on your FlightSim 2000 manual yet? I really do fly a jet every day (B737). B747 skipper my ass.
