Tail Hook Flight Tests
Here is my first on board video while doing early flights tests with a tail hook. I am using my Hobby Zone Super Cub since it is slower and easier to land, but I intend to eventually take the lessons learned and apply them using my Parkzone T-28 Trojan. I have workable solutions for the trap wire and tail hook. Now I am practicing landing. As usual, I was battling the wind today (9 mph). I had to fly a pattern I don't normally use, which took me over a building and a fence. But the wind dictates all in this hobby. At first I started with my usual pattern (rectangle and high approach), but as I progressed I began flying lower and in more of an oval pattern ... which I find easier to get the plane in position farther out. Once again, wind is a big factor in whether or not flying low is feasible during the base approach. As the video progresses I tend to get lower each time. SUCCESS! I caught the wire ONE time today ... but I also hit one of the bricks I use as anchors and broke a wing strut, so I don't know if I can count it as complete success. I tacked on an overview of my trap setup, at the end, with a simulated approach.PS - Sorry the resolution sucks. You Tube kills the clarity of this video.

I did it just to see if I could. It is not as easy as it looks.

Why do you need a tail hook and trap if you have all that space to fly in and land? Parking lot is plenty of space for landing.
