The issue facing this country abt FREEDOM rights is how realistic ppl can take their alternative views to be acted upon.Complaining in the air at Speaker's corners, kopitiams, is NOT freedom of speech. It's idle chatter.

U've got the meaning of dictatorship wrong. A dictatorship is when ONLY one party takes over the whole ruling of the state. Anyone in the world can complain but how far can u take ur complains to? That's the freedom CSJ/JBJ and talking about. The issue here is how far u SHOULD take ur complain to... No one is talking abt ABSOLUTE freedom.

Anyway MM Lee himself said tt SG's political system has to evolve! Cme on,giv them time. They allowed demostrations at the speakers corner already.

I agree that Singapore has a prosperous, burgeoning and free economy, but sadly the same cannot be said for freedom of media, freedom of speech and so on.You said that Singaporeans are living good lives despite being bereft of freedom, but you might wanna take a look at how taxes are skyrocketing into unfathomable proportions and yet citizens are afraid to let the government know, out of fear of punishment.

I think you've misinterpreted what I've just said, what I'm trying to say is that if you support dictators, you might as well try living a life in Iran or North Korea, etcetera etcetera... I'M NOT COMPARING SINGAPORE WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED COUNTRIES, there, I've said my piece, hope it will clear up misunderstandings regarding my previous comment.

You do not have to watch other vids, the fact that we can comment, discuss, complain so freely here clearly shows that we are not a dictator state.Look at any dictator known vids and see whether they complain as much as we do.We have this freedom but many abuse it by complaining, critisizing. What if you have absolute freedom, will u abuse it?We have controlled freedom to protect our harmony as a multi-cultural,religion society.Control is respect as for political freedom, still lack some transparency.
curiousboy (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
i mean freedom to a certain extent that is debated constantly by JBJ and CSJ.

DO u know wat's the meaning of dictator? It's basically an individual person who rules. Singapore is ruled by a single person's party.. so it IS a dictatorship. However, it is ruled very well economically. But on the social aspect, u cannot have much freedom in a dictatorship. |
