okay weird, that was meant to reply to an older post!Paint is another non-newtonian fluid that is shear-thinning like ketchup. When you stick your paint brush in a bucket, you want it to be thinner, so you can mix it and actually get it on the brush. When you put the paint on the wall however, you want it to be thicker so it doesn't run.

Actually, ketchup IS non-newtonian, however in the opposite way to the cornstarch mix above.The cornstarch mix is 'shear-thickening', the faster the deformation you apply the thicker it will become (more viscous). That's why they have to move fast on it, otherwise it won't get thick enough and they will sink.Ketchup is shear-thinning, the greater force you apply to it, the thinner it gets. Try shaking a bottle really hard with ketchup in it, you'll notice that it suddenly sounds runny!
