yes they actually did. The Fly as Bono's alter ego came up another way; Everytime when the band had a bit of a bad moment he putted op the glasses he is wearing and started talking like a failed filosofist that you always can find in the pub. He escaped himself for a moment and that is how the fly was born.. + the song!

this was the song that finally knocked everything I do I do it for you by bryan adams off the top spot. This was also one of the best songs U2 did.
