People also need to bear in mind that Al Jolson was JEWISH. I'm sure Jolson knew all about the pain of racial vilification. The "blackface" makeup was not meant to be patronising.

a great performer in his time and performing black face wasnt racist in his time and i find it quite funny because as B3LLEND said racism only exist if you think there is a difference between all people on this earth

Great performer, appalling exploitation number. Or am I too cynical? Yip. But I think, he even exploited his own pain...

What an inane comment. So racism is limited to black people?? What about Asian, South American, White, Aboriginal any many other "races"?? "Racism" only exists if you believe there is a differentiation between peoples skin colour and nationality. There is only one race, the human race. If you think racism is targetted towards "black" people then you yourself are guilty of racism as you think of "black" people as a "different " race to other people.

that's easy to say in 2008, so they LOVED all the stereotypes and mammy roles right ? Stephin Fetchit , such a lovely creation , ...as for Jolson and the history of blackface...well, people found slavery pretty normal in 1800, even, Thomas Jefferson owned and f****d quite a few...ever seen "birth of a nation " , lots of white guys playing black in that movie..yup, wasn't racist at all, just good ol' uncle tom shuffling' along, tapping and grinning...ah, the good ol' days!!

Very true! Jolson fought for African-American rights in the performance industry. |
