He's cutting the blank in half with a hot wire, and then glues it back together with a wooden stringer down the center of the board. This adds stiffness.If you've ever tried cutting polystyrene foam with a saw, you'll know that it does not cut cleanly. Using a hot wire, it melts the edges and is absolutely straight.

Why do uou cut the blank in half with your hotwire? It then looks like you glue in back together.

Do you mean the thing Greg calls a 'blank'?It's EPS Foam... Expanded Poly-Styrene, aka StyroFoam.
