The power of a fleet with an aircraft carrier is it's ability to project organic airpower a long distance inland from any international waters, in support of ground forces. During the cold war, cruise missile techonlogy was not advanced enough, end even now it would be very expensive and not responsive enough. An aircraft can sit on patrol a few miles behind the front lines and be in position to support troops within a few minutes. The same is not true of submarine-based cruise missiles.

The wires are held just slightly above the surface of the deck, but lower than half the height of the wheels, so the wheels will just roll over them. It's very similar to the system the US use.

Well, they were building several supercarriers , very similar to the current US supercarriers, just before the collapse of the USSR, which is why they postponed the construction.

How do they get those hook things to touch down right before the wires? What if you land a few feet before and the wheels touch down before the wires?

Well said, although could I be a real picker and say that a decline is what happens after a zenith anyway? =P Sorry!

The U.S. just like any other empire is in decline shortly after its zenith. Financial problems, Political issues and others are contributing to this. It is like the Byzantine or the Ottoman empire in it's last days(well actually yrs): Still the strongest but slowly dying out. The Chinese and the Russians are probable successors. Russia has remains of a superpower, they could buid up. China is amassing money, technology and education. What will happen? Noone knows... |
