My late father flew 97 night heckler missions with VC-3 flying the F4U-5N off of USS Boxer and USS Kearsarge. Most of his sorties were to blow up trucks, trains, bridges and tunnels. He went on to be an experimental test pilot with Douglas/McDonnell Douglas/Boeing between 1957-1999. A believer in Jesus Christ, a gentleman, wonderful father, patriot and accomplished pilot. He is missed.

The right wing pod is a radar... historically it was one of the first planes in the Pacific (along with the F6F) that had them... allowed them to intercept at night.

they cant, on the ground you have to stick your head out the canopy and "fishtail" around. in the air it's not much of a problem because it flies nose down in straight and level flight. but you still can't see anything directly in front and slightly below you. just one of those things, there's a price to pay for 2000 horses
